It's starting to jump off the canvas! [Oct. 2nd, 2009|03:11 pm]
[Tags|, , , ]

I've been making a lot of progress on this piece over the last week.

If you would like to see the whole album of progress shots, it should be visible here with or without a Facebook account.

In the meantime, I'm working on a new content managed website and will be posting these progress images as blog posts that will be feed to this journal as well as my Facebook page once the site is ready to go live. I've already tested out all the interactivity, and I'm working on getting the gallery section of the site up and running. Working on my art is my top priority, so the site is slowly coming togther, but I'm pleased with the progress I've been making so far and will post an announcement here as soon as it's launched.

Crossposted in a few places.

Cat Blossoms [Jul. 15th, 2009|05:47 pm]
[Tags|]

I'm very happy to finally be finished this painting. It took many months with many pauses for a break in the monotony of painting over 1000 tiny cat-shaped cherry blossoms. I hope you enjoy it!

Acrylic on canvas, 24"x48"

Uh, yeah, long time no see. I'm still around but I've been very busy and have a number of projects on the go.

I've also been having problems with a supplier dragging their feet after my website's domain name expired without notice almost 3 weeks ago. Fortunately, I've had the site restored and it's being hosted on a more reliable server. I'll be updating it soon with more work.

[Current Location |Vancouver, BC]

I don't think I've updated this journal in a couple of months. That's not to say that there hasn't been anything going on creatively speaking. I'm putting together a project that reflects on the idea of gentrification in contrast to the degree of poverty and drug use in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. I'm still in the planning phases for since it involves a bit more investigation into local culture and communities before I can move forward so this journal will probably continue to be quiet until I have more to report or show.

Communication Arts

originally uploaded by blackturtleneck.

This isn't the best photo of a magazine I've ever taken but here's the cover of the March/April issue of Communication Arts Magazine. My Carlitos signage is on page 87. Click the image to see a shot of the inside.

Special thank you to [info]mrlarter for taking the photo of the signage for me. Unfortunately they chose not to credit it so I give you credit here.

The Southwest Portion of the Great American Roadtrip [Feb. 23rd, 2006|09:16 pm]
[Tags|, , ]

We arrived in Vancouver after a 9 day long trip through America starting in Maine, going south to North Carolina, west through Tennessee, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, California and all states between until we reached the border of BC. I'm slowly putting together some of the panoramas that we took along the way. These images are pretty big and will show up slowly on a dial-up connection. If you'd like to see the region on Google Maps, click on the photo and a new window will popup with a zoomed in view of the area photographed.

ROUTE 66
After reaching Oklahoma City, we joined the I-40 to travel west. The I-40 replaced the original Route 66 whick is now refered to as Historic Route 66. Here's a photo of an old section of it in (I think) New Mexico as we got closer to Arizona )

GRAND CANYON
Once reaching Flagstaff, Arizona, we took a side highway to the Grand Canyon. The air was unusually thin in Flagstaff because the area around it sits at a high elevation of somewhere between 6000 - 7500 feet above sea level. The next images are larger in file size to preserve some of the detail in them. At it's widest point, the Grand Canyon is 10 miles across. That's insane. )

DRIVING HISTORIC ROUTE 66
Somewhere between Gallup, New Mexico and Flagstaff, Arizona and starting just passed the area of Williams is a turn off to a longer section of Historic Route 66. This route has little to no traffic and takes those who drive it through the most amazing expanses of open space. There is nothing around to give a sense of scale. This photo was taken in the middle of a valley. Start at one end of it and slowly scroll in the opposite direction and you'll have a 360 degree view of what I saw standing on the side of the road. )

LAS VEGAS
At the end of this section of the old road, we arrived in Kingman and headed north through more desert to Las Vegas. Vegas is big, bright and very difficult to get panoramic photos of because everything is moving and blinking. I did manage to get one panorama shot before getting distracted by sparkly things. )

THE DESERT
We stayed in Vegas for a night before departing for the desert toward California. The Southwest desert is beautiful. I knew we weren't going to make it to Joshua Tree National Park so I made it a point to stop the car for some photos as we were coming out of Nevada and into California. )

I'll be putting up more images over the course of the next week. We're in Vancouver now but staying with a friend until we move into our new place. I'm hoping that I'll have the time to catalogue all our photos in this manner eventually but these are some of the more interesting ones of landscapes that grabbed us.

[info]n0man found this link today about compromised Livejournal account security and hijacked accounts. It's an interesting read and may apply to a lot of Livejournal users. Please read it and be cautious about your blogging or anything else you do online for that matter.

We've settled some of our moving plans. We'll be driving to the NB/Maine border at the end of the month. Not sure of the departure date just yet but we'll know once we have our moving company chosen and booked (we're calling around for this on Wednesday). Once we cross into the US, we're driving along the coast as far as Baltimore, then heading south west to Tennesee where we'll be visiting with Alan and Joanne. We're then driving west to Oklahoma City where we're connecting to Route 66. We're driving Route 66 all the way to LA where we'll then connect with a yet to be determined west coast highway that will take us to Sam and Aren's doorstep in the Portland area and then to Chris' doorstep in Vancouver where we'll stay until we have a new home.

Along the way, we're hoping to catch Graceland for the cheese factor. We're also hoping to take a detour into Nevada to check out Las Vegas and then get back on 66 around 80km outside of LA (I don't know the name of this place, just that it's where the 15 rejoins with 66 on Google Earth). Don't worry, Dave's dad is ordering maps for us. There is no way I'd rely on road information from Google Earth or Google Maps.

Here's a simple illustration of Route 66:

"Okemo" appears to mark where Oklahoma City is or thereabouts.

I'm using the path tool in Google Earth to trace our path and get an idea of how far we'll be driving. It won't be accurate but it'll give us an idea of how long this will take. More details as they appear.

11 cop cars, 2 ambulances, a huge brawl and lots of people being wrestled to the ground by cops. All across the street at Alexander's Pub.

Consider this research for an art project that I'll post here at a later date [Nov. 9th, 2005|02:00 pm]
If you read this, even if we don't speak often, post a comment with a memory of you and me. It can be anything you want! When you're finished, post this little paragraph on your blog and be surprised (or mortified) about what people remember about you.

Way back in July, I posted this:

It doesn't have a name and it will probably be known as "Untitled" on it's own but it's one of a few images that I've had to put on hold for the last few months. Aside from my day job getting in the way of the work I do at night, I've been thinking a lot about the things that inspired the series of photographs that will become Endurance and haven't wanted to continue with them until the concept solidified for me. That process is starting to come together so I'd like to take this opportunity to write about Endurance, the idea behind it and where the idea comes from. It started months ago with Plastique.

Plastique was about the intimate relationships we have with others - both sexual and non-sexual - the expectations we have of one another and how those expectations distort our relationships. Though the images are stills and the figures are posed motionless, the very nature of any relationship is that it moves forward through time and with time comes change. Endurance is different from Plastique in a number of ways. The most obvious will be that the images are much more manipulated but the most significant difference is that this series is about a desire for stillness.

Imagine a friend or lover from your past, one with whom you had a wonderful connection but is no longer a part of your life. Endurance examines the nature of these relationships and how they change because of the dynamic nature of time - something that we are all at the mercy of. With those closest to us we can experience stillness but time doesn't stop even when we wish it could so we could savour the moment for a bit longer.

I spent some time in Florence a few years ago and saw Michaelangelo's David. The figure was so much more beautiful and otherworldly in person than in any photograph I had seen but the stone it was carved from showed hints of wear brought on by time. The David that Michaelangelo created is different than the one I saw in that gallery. His probably gleamed where the one I saw, though still beautiful, had aged and is showing signs of wear. And there is a (still emerging) parallel there for me that links this notion of something as permanant as stone with the unreliable durability of memory that sifts through a filter of time, nostalgia and sentimentality.

With time our memories fade and warp. With time the nature of the relationships we have with others change and evolve. What if we could halt change and solidify those golden moments of joy so that we could preserve and enjoy them at our own whim rather than through whatever card destiny hands us?

-----

Outside my circle of family members, there are three very important men in my life and I am very fortunate to have had (and am still having) wonderful relationships with them all. I asked them to model for this series because there have been times when I've felt that desire to have nothing ever change. My work with the images is far from done. Two of the three men have posed and the third will pose when I see him in Vancouver. The poses are inspired by the works of Michaelangelo.

"Halifax graphic artist Jennifer Romita will scare you stiff"

Well what do you know? I've been featured on the front page of "CreativeCommons"; a wonderfully helpful site that provides various plain english intellectual property rights protection notices for creators of all flavours. James and I both link to their site to provide explainations of what others can and cannot do with our creative work.

Click the link for the writeup. Perma link found here.

Thanks Creative Commons. You guys are right on!

[Feeling | tired]

I spent the last few hours working on my design site which is due to be launched at the end of October. I haven't had any time to work on it until now and I haven't been able to get to working on any of the Body Language series or the Endurance series either. One job has been getting in the way of all that and I'm looking forward to seeing some change in that arena by the end of the week.

As usual, this blog probably won't be updated much unless there is new work to be shown but since I haven't posted anything here in a long time I figured I should give an update. Check back for a link to my new site when it's finished and a few more pieces from Body Language. I hope to have all of this completed soon.
